We will discuss in detail areas such as temperament, personality, physical features, and lifespan of a Dachshund Schnauzer mix.
We also look at the required physical demands and potential health of this mix.
In concluding, we consider whether a Dachshund Schnauzer Mix is the right dog choice for you and your family.
What Is a Dachshund Schnauzer Mix?
A Dachshund Schnauzer Mix is the result of breeding a Dachshund with a Schnauzer. This mix often takes on the name of a Schnoxie.
Furthermore, the most common mix here combines a dachshund with that of a Miniature Schnauzer. It is most likely due to the similarities in the size of both dogs.
This cross takes genes from the German-bred dachshund, famed initially for its hunting skills. Now one of the most popular dog breeds, dachshund, is considered the family favorite. Exquisite in looks, these small dogs are the more elegant of the dog world and considered highly intelligent dogs.
The other parent of this cross comes from the other German bred dog, that of the Schnauzer. With visually distinctive features, these dogs are also believed to be one of the most intelligent of the dog world.
An ancient breed, Schnauzers, were initially bred as rat-catchers and guard dogs. Now, they too find themselves at the side of many a loving home environment.
Thus, by bringing these two fantastic dogs together, you end up with an adorable looking and loving Schnoxie companion.
Dachshund Schnauzer Mix Physical Appearance
With the Dachshund Schnauzer Mix, there are several fantastic physical combinations possible. Each dog is different, and the final result will all depend mainly on the stronger parent gene.
However, there are some common elements you can usually spot instantly in Schnoxie, including:
- A medium-sized build and height
- Weights ranging from 15 to 30 pounds
- Heights of eight to 14 inches
- Typical Dachshund floppy ears
- The low body structure of a Dachshund
- Short stubby paws of a Dachshund
- Wiry coats of a Schnauzer
- Combination of popular Schnauzer and Dachshund colours
- Prominent facial features of a Dachshund or Schnauzer
You will more than likely find a wide variety of colours with the Dachshund Schnauzer Mix.
However, most common Schnoxie blends are the Dachshunds distinct black and tan or the Schnauzers silver and grey patterns.
Typically, the coat takes the wiry texture of a Schnauzer’s fur, especially if the Dachshund parent was also wire-haired.
Dachshund Schnauzer Mix Personality and Temperament
One of the most energetic of dogs, the Dachshund Schnauzer Mix, certainly has a zest for life. This is why families, and especially those with children, favour them.
The larger than life personality is a predominate Schnauzer trait. Schnauzers are famous for their extrovert character!
Preferring the love and affection of humans, they are most content being the center of human attention.
As well as that, Schnauzers quickly become attached to their owners and family members and very rarely leave their side.
Furthermore, it is the dog breed that is popular amongst dog lovers because of its spirit.
Boasting a placid nature, many Schnauzer owners will talk of this breed as a most fearless dog. On the other side, Schnauzers have a high-energy temperament and friendly character.
The dachshund breed is also the most loveable of companions and devotes itself to their human pack leaders. Another playful dog, dachshunds have a fantastic loving streak that works well with larger families.
In addition to its beautiful nature, dachshund owners love the courageousness of this breed – despite their apparent small body size!
Devoted to their owners, this dog is one of the smaller in the canine worlds – yet, it doesn’t realize its modest standing and often behaves like a lager guard dog when protecting its owners.
This confidence of both individual dogs is incredible in the mix itself. But there is also the potential for the Dachshund Schnauzer Mix to become too over-protective and stubborn.
On the positive side, it is easily remedied by proper socializing and training very early on in the dog’s life. However, it’s a niggle that does need to be kept in check.
Dachshund Schnauzer Mix Lifespan
Breed experts suggest that the Dachshund Schnauzer Mix has a lifespan of around 12 to 15 years.
In considering the potential lifespans of each dog individually:
- A dachshund is has a lifespan of potentially 12 to 16 years.
- A Schnauzer has a lifespan of 12 to 15 years on average.
It is a comforting figure considering that many dachshund mixes have significantly reduced lifespans due to their incompatibility.
Therefore, it pays to assure that your Dachshund Schnauzer Mix puppy comes from the healthiest of breeding parents. Unfortunately, such a heritage of a dog isn’t always available when it comes to a rescued pup or dog.
However, it’s comforting to know that with the right lifestyle, these beautiful little dogs can live a long time.

Dachshund Schnauzer Mix Health
Fortunately, there aren’t any specific known health issues affecting the Dachshund Schnauzer Mix. But, to ensure you’ve all the information about possible health issues, it’s worth looking into each dog separately.
The dachshund breed is well known for its potential structural problems. Because of their lower body structure and elongated body shape, spinal problems are a major issue in the dachshund breed.
The shorter legs of a dachshund can also contribute to spinal health problems, such as Intervertebral Disk Disease.
Apart from IVDD, weiner dogs are also prone to eye problems, Cushing’s syndrome, obesity, acanthosis nigricans, and cancer.
When it comes to the Schnauzer, this breed does have a smaller list of potential health problems. It includes that of the common bladder stones and atopy. Additionally, this breed can be more prone to specific allergens, which cause skin conditions.
However, there is nothing to suggest that a Dachshund Schnauzer Mix is going to suffer from any such complaints.
Still, it is only in the case if you provide good care for your Schnoxie and register it with a good veterinarian. This way, you can deal with any health issues that do arise immediately when they occur.
Schnoxie Exercise and Activity Requirements
Dachshund Schnauzer mix is the crossbreed that needs a lot of both mental and physical stimulation!
Many owners consider the Dachshund Schnauzer Mix as a high energy dog.
This mix needs a couple of walks daily, whereby it can run off as much excess energy as possible.
We recommend several walks daily, however, they should not be overly strenuous due to the small stature of the Schnoxie. Instead, somewhere this dog can run freely and safely would be perfect.
It is a mix that would also benefit from plentiful yard time and several toys to keep them stimulated daily.
However, it’s worth remembering that the Schnoxie can be one of the quicker ones when off-leash.
It will often chase down small animals, as it is the inherent nature of both the Dachshund and the Schnauzer. So, be sure your mix is properly trained and be confident of recall before you let them off-leash.
Is a Dachshund Schnauzer Mix Right Dog for You?
By now, you’ll hopefully have a clear idea of the type of personality the Dachshund Schnauzer mix is. You may then be wondering if it could be the ideal four-legged companion for you and your current circumstances.
A Dachshund Schnauzer Mix is an excellent dog for:
✓ Large family homes: Schnoxie loves being centre of attention, so the more people in their family home and environment, the better. Plus, having more members means the dog gets all the attention its energetic nature needs.
✓ Homes with children: As long as your mix has been able to interact and socialise correctly from a very early age, it should get on very well with children. This crossbreed is excellent for younger members of the household.
✓Homes with people around for many hours of the day: Both the Dachshund and Schnauzer of this mix crave human companionship. This breed will thrive with having someone around for most of the day. If their socialisation needs can’t be met, they can become bored and disruptive.
Thus, if you aren’t going to be around for most of the day, can someone dog sit for you? A Dachshund Schnauzer Mix will not do well with limited human interaction.
✓ Active homes: Because of its sheer energy, determination, and endless enthusiasm, Schnoxie loves life. Therefore, placed in a house with members that are always on the go, this mix will fit in with ease.
✓ Homes with other friendly and calm dogs: Current owners of this mix regularly state that this is a breed that thrives in the company of other dogs. They often see them running over to greet the other dogs when out and about.
Therefore, if you have the time and indeed love and affection to dedicate to a new canine addition, the Dachshund Schnauzer Mix could just be your next choice!

I am desperately looking for a Schnoxie puppy. I didn’t know that when I adopted “Norman” from Petsmart 16 years ago that he was a Schnoxie, but now I am sure. I miss him so much. Please, if anyone knows where I might find a puppy, please let me know. They are wonderful companions.
I used to have a schnoxie (he sadly passed a few years ago) and am having trouble finding another. He was simply the best dog I ever had. Any suggestions on finding a breeder?
Thanks Shirl. Our Joey is a real gem for sure. Through the VA, we’re officially categorizing her as a “comfort dog”. She’s already a wonderful little comforter who really helps distract me from my Agent Orange related chronic (and severe) hand and foot pain. May God bless you richly in these challenging times, Bill Byrum
Love reading this and seeing my Winnie in the pictures! We now have another schnoxie, Bert, and they are definitely the best little dogs. So full of love and sassy character. I know I’m biased but they’re by far my favourite breed 🐾
Thank you so much for sharing these pictures with our readers! We are very grateful.
My sweet girl got cancer and we put her down yesterday. I had her eight years. She always had the best personality and looked just like your Winnie. She was a rescue and I don’t know how to find a similar breed. If you don’t mind me asking, where di you get Bert and Winnie? Thank you
I have a four month old cream colored Schnoxie female Texan named “Jolene” aka “Joey”. This pup is apparently: brilliant and strategic and hilarious and rambunctious while being snuggly-loving and very cute and cuddly. What character, right? Her dad is a rare cream color
Mini Schnauzer and Mom a really sharp and playful Mini Daschund. My pup is fun to watch as she jumps and dances and spins. And, she’s so full of grace as she lays lovingly alongside me or Carol. Then (officially) she’s already a great service dog companion to this old (73 years) Vietnam vet. Owner of poodle dogs most of my life, I gotta say this mixer is just perfect for me and Carol Sue my wife of 39 years. Yep, God has richly blessed us with our l’il Joey.
Thanks for sharing your story!
Oh my goodness! Thank you for posting this! I have been considering getting a “new” service dog. My little man, Duke, a rescue, (also my second service dog), is getting up in years. I want a pup or rescue for Duke to help raise before he should retire. I read this and immediately got ready eyed! You, sir, are a gem! Thank you so very much for your service to our wonderful country!! Good bless.
